Herringswell - The Manor
_______________________________________________
-
Herringswell Manor is a large mock Tudor house built as a private home in 1901 on the previous site of the Manor.
-
In 1981 the Manor and 14 acres was bought by members of the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh sect and up to 200 'orange people' as they were known due to their coloured robes, lived in the commune
-
Because of this influx, after much debate, a Parish Council was formed but the Baghwan died and the commune was wound up in 1985.
-
The house was bought by the Shi Tennoji school, a Japanese Buddhist boarding school but was closed in 2001.
-
The property was purchased by a property developer, who, not being able to develop it as a Country Club/Hotel asked for planning permission to convert it into dwellings.
-
The local residents, Parish Council and District Council rejected the proposal for 51 dwellings and gave planning permission for 29 - a more sensible number given the location, roads and facilities of this rural area.
-
The developers, as is to be expected in this day and age, not being satisfied with the amount of money they would make on 29 dwellings lodged an appeal.
-
AGAINST THE WISHES OF THE LOCAL PEOPLE, PARISH COUNCIL AND FOREST HEATH DISTRICT COUNCIL, the government Planning Inspector allowed the Appeal (so much for democracy)
-
More worryingly, the Inspector had based his decision-making partly on his mistaken view that 10,000 dwellings - with the infrastructure to go along with it - were to be constructed at Red Lodge, which is the nearest village to Herringswell - approx 2km from the Herringswell Manor. read more.....
-
Whilst this is not the case, there have been proposals mentioned to create this new town - WILL THE PROSPECTIVE PURCHASERS BE MADE AWARE OF THIS?? (go to ON THE DEVELOPMENT FRONT for further information)
- The developer now wants to convert the former gym into 24 dwellings (no doubt to maximise profit) which will cause the site to be very over-developed. The application was lodged in August 2008 and the outcome is awaited.
